Welcome to our very first lecture in this course. We will start by discussing the main theories of social change while all along relating these to development. In particular, we will look at the relevance of the theories to the African situation bringing out the relevant driving forces in social change such as the role of technology, education, politics, economy, rural-urban dichotomy, demographic factors and also gender. Our hope is that you will enjoy this lecture and also the exercises and activities that go with it.

This unit will expose you to very important aspects of project planning, design and implementations by drawing you to certain practical issues encountered in project management. This will aim to provoke your positive thinking and thus stimulate imagination and creativity that will result in equipping you with skills and knowledge necessary for designing, planning, and implementing any type of projects.

This course is a survey of the origin and development of Psychology in relation to contemporary Psychology and its foundations in Philosophy and Physiology. Special attention is given to the systems of thought that have emerged since the founding of Psychology as an empirical science.

Ethics refers to the correct rules of conduct necessary when carrying out research. We have a moral responsibility to protect research participants from harm.Researchers have a duty to respect the rights and dignity of research participants. Neuropsychology is a branch of psychology that studies how the nervous system (particularly the brain) influences behaviour and mental processes. It is the study of how the complex properties of the brain allow for the behaviour to occur.

Rural development is a broad discipline that covers many different themes. The central theme is defined by the name. In this module, rural development is about progress and change in the rural areas of developing countries. It is concerned with the factors that affect rural change, how we define progress, and what can be done to bring about the overriding objective of rural development, which is to reduce, and eventually eliminate, rural poverty.

During the middle ages, philosophy was virtually the handmaiden of theology but the blending of philosophy and theology was an unstable one. Philosophy was set at providing an intellectual and metaphysical foundation for revealed religion. By the close of the middle ages, the medieval marriage between religion and philosophy had become strained, and during renaissance there was a decisive separation between the two.

Socrates is said to have reacted against the teachings of the Sophists among whom he is sometimes grouped. He wanted to keep his native city of Athens from the moral destruction toward which the Sophists were leading it. Like the Sophists, he wandered from place to place discussing moral life and convictions with the people he met on the streets.

This module introduces you to the basic concepts, principles and issues in creativity and innovation. The module begins with clarification of the concepts, nature and scope of creativity. This enables you to clearly see and appreciate the distinction between creativity and innovation and the importance of both skills in the 21 st century.

The term philosophy is derived from a combination of two Greek words, namely philia (love) and Sophia (wisdom) meaning love of wisdom. You may therefore, define philosophy as love of wisdom. This definition has persisted for more than two thousand years.

This course is aimed at helping you to develop the capacity to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of contexts, learn independently, collaborate with others, think critically as well as become an information literate citizen. This is a skills based course, which is taken by all the first year students across disciplines at the university.

Any motion that repeats itself in equal intervals of time is called periodic motion. If a particle in periodic motion moves back and forth over the same path, the motion is said to be oscillatory or vibratory. Oscillatory periodic systems are sources of harmonic waves. A system that executes periodic motion is under acceleration and this is the primary requirement for generating a harmonic wave.

Motivation and Emotion covers areas of motivation and emotion that significantly relate to behavior and mental processes. Such areas include hunger, thirst, sex and the theories that explain the biological and psychological factors involved. An attempt is made to tie in emotional experiences with motivations for behavior.

This course description is made with appreciation of the reciprocity between Literature in English and English Language. It reflects the situation in Kenya where the two distinct subjects are integrated under the heading: English. Similarly, recent developments relating to the teaching of Literature in the modern secondary school have been adequately catered for.

In scientific research, the following terminologies are important and fundamental to the processes of data collecting, preparation, analysis, and reporting. As you will notice, not all the concepts are applicable to every case of data collection, analysis and reporting. Some of these concepts specifically apply to quantitative analysis while others are specific qualitative analysis.
