MENTORING TOOL FOR CIVIL ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN
Mentoring relationships have demonstrated to be an excellent way of enhancing professional growth. Both the mentor and the mentee give and grow in the mentoring process. The mentee can learn valuable knowledge from the mentor’s expertise and past mistakes and competencies can be strengthened in specific areas. Mentees will have the opportunity to establish valuable connections with higher level employees. The success
of mentoring will depend on clearly defined roles and expectations in addition to the mentee’s awareness of the benefits of participating in the mentoring program

CONCRETE MATERIALS
Concrete is a mixture of cement, aggregate and water; which when fresh, forms a paste that later on sets and hardens by means of hydration reactions to form a solid (stone-like) material.
CEMENT
According to BS 12, cement is hydraulic binder (finely ground inorganic material), which when mixed with water forms a paste that sets and hardens by means of hydration reactions and
processes; and which after hardening retains its strength and stability even under water.
a) Type of cement:
However there are many types of cement for different construction purposes, the most frequently used types are:
Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC): used in safe environment (free from chemical attack).
Sulphate Resisting Portland Cement (SRPC): used in sulphate exposure (e.g. in sea waters, chemical industries, etc).

ASPHALT MATERIALS
Asphalt is the material of choice for heavy traffic roads due to its strength, durability and ease of maintenance and rehabilitation. It is also ideal for urban roads due to speed of construction, noise reduction, better surface drainage and ease of cleaning.
Asphalt composition consists of bitumen and aggregates in a definite proportions. Bitumen combines with filler to produce mastic paste that binds the aggregate particles and fills the voids in the aggregate blend; while aggregates provide adequate strength and skid resistance for the layer.

CARTOGRAPHY
In an introductory theoretical way the authors attempt to place cartography into the general
context of sciences. Based on the traditional definition describing cartography as a science,
technique and art, its defined scientific role in the development of geographic thinking is
analyzed. This approach corresponds to the procedural method in epistemology. Cartography is, according to a general model in science, classified considering the fact whether its sources of origin of the concepts, its principles and postulates are genuine or derivatives from other disciplines.

Cadastral Survey
A cadastral survey (also called a property survey or land boundary survey) is a detailed
mapping and demarcation of land parcels to establish legal boundaries, ownership rights, and
land tenure. It is a fundamental component of land administration systems worldwide.
1. Key Purposes of a Cadastral Survey
• Define property boundaries (prevents land disputes).
• Support land registration & titling (legal proof of ownership).
• Facilitate land transactions (sales, leases, mortgages).
• Aid urban planning & taxation (zoning, property taxes).
• Resolve conflicts between neighboring landowners.

METHODS OF DIFFERENTIATION AND APPLICATIONS OF DERIVATIVE
The rate of change of one dependent quantity with respect to another dependent quantity has great importance. E.g. the rate of change of displacement of a particle with respect to time is called its velocity and the rate of change
of velocity is called its acceleration. The rate of change of a quantity ‘y’ with respect to another quantity ‘x’ is known as the derivative or differentiable coefficient of ‘y’ with respect to ‘x.’

Matrix Solution of Equations
The need to solve systems of linear equations arises frequently in engineering. The analysis of electric circuits and the control of systems are two examples. Cramers rule for solving such systems involves the calculation of determinants and their ratio. For systems containing only a few equations it is a useful method of solution.

CONTOURING
(i). Contour line. It is a line of intersection of a level surface with the ground surface. It is also defined as a line passing through points of equal reduced levels. Contour maps are then prepared to show the nature or topography of the ground surface.
(ii). Contour interval. It is defined as the vertical distance between any two consecutive contours. If two successive contour lines have elevation 2000m and 1500m, then the contour interval is 500m (i.e. 2000m-1500m). Contour interval is constant for a particular map.

Photogrammetry RS Rectification
Rectification in the photogrammetric sense means the removal of the effects of tilt on the images in a tilted photograph. It is the process of making equivalent vertical photographs from tilted photo negatives. The resulting equivalent vertical photos are called rectified photos.
The process of rectification may entail:
i) Plotting from the tilted photo onto another object sheet such that the plotted points are free from tilt displacement. This is called graphical rectification. An example of this is the
paper strip method.
ii) Optical projection of the photo image onto the map plane and alignment of corresponding
features before plotting the missing features in the map by direct tracing. The aero sketch master is an example of this.
iii) Photographic rectification (Optical- mechanical rectification) whereby the tilted photograph is projected optically such that the projected image is tilt-free and the image is then photographed to obtain the equivalent vertical photograph. Anharmonic Ratios
