MATH 240: PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS I
A random variable is a rule that assigns a numerical value to each outcome in
the sample space. It maps events from the sample space S to the real numbers
X: X : S-R, that is, if S is the sample space with a probability measure and
X is a function defined with real values over the elements of S, then X is called
a random variable and associates a real number with each result in the sample
space.

Continuous Random Variables & Probability Distributions
A random variable X is continuous if possible values comprise either a single interval on the number line or a union of disjoint intervals.
Example: If in the study of the ecology of a lake, X, the r.v. may be depth measurements at randomly chosen locations.
Then X is a continuous r.v. The range for X is the minimum depth possible to the maximum depth possible.
