Education is a social institution that sociologists are very interested in studying. This includes teaching formal knowledge such as reading, writing, and arithmetic, as well as teaching other things such as morals, values, and ethics. Education prepares young people for entry into society and is thus a form of socialization. A sociologist wants to know how this form of socialization affects and is affected by other social structures, experiences, and outcomes.

Sociology Of Education is the scientific study of education structure, processes and practices from a sociological perspective in which the methods and theories of Sociology are used in education.

Sociology In other words it is the study of mans behavior in groups or the interactions among human beings, of social relationships and the processes by which human group activity takes place.

In this lesson, we are going to lay the foundations for the entire course by defining key terms marriage and family and by exploring the origins of the family. Marriage and family are the building blocks of any society and as students of sociology; we know that family is the basic institution of society. The purpose of this lesson is to help you understand what marriage and family all are about.

This is a very exciting course which many social science scholars have termed as the Queen Mother of all social sciences. Many people not schooled in sociology liken it to socialization which is incorrect. Socialization is a small part of sociology and shall be covered in due course. In this course all sociological concepts will be introduced to you. The key purpose of this module is to expose you basic sociological concepts and knowledge enough to illuminate your interest in social sciences and particularly sociology. A good theory is a way of making sense of a disturbing situation. To engage in theorizing means to take thought about what is there to be learned. Theories are explanations based on observations and reasoning.

By the end of this module, the learner will be able to have a clear understanding of Childhood, the difference between child and childhood, the evolution of childhood, the characteristics of a child, the social construction of a child, socialization, the principles of development of childhood in communities, the global child, child rearing practices, children abuse and the African and international conventions on the rights of a child.

Sociology as a discipline is studies society and the social life and how people in group interact. These interactions influence how people behavior in everyday life including their health behaviour.
